Every January I pick a phrase that I will focus on to help guide me through the transitions in my wardrobe, and to be ready for the next season. I know it’s already March.

 

This is it!
“Wear What I Own”

 

What! You ask? Yes!

Bodies change; lifestyles change, jobs change, and fashion is constantly evolving. That is what makes building and maintaining the “right” wardrobe so fun! Starting with what you already own helps define the roadmap to build a lasting, timeless wardrobe.

 

Trends in general

Let’s talk about trends as we shed our sweaters (unless they are lightweight cashmere). When I was in France last fall, I had expected to see some obvious trends to report back on. The surprising thing is I could not come up with a definite trend to share.

 

I guess that makes sense. In our part of the world, “we” are on a continuum of looking for the next shiny object, so to speak. Maybe it is a fear of missing out or feeling behind? Especially for those of us that keep an eye on these very important (Ha!) Fashion trends. In France, I saw both men and women owning their fantastically put-together styles. Not forced, and not necessarily “On Trend.”

 

Confidence was the trend.

If any of you are watching the series “Love Story” about the romance of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, you will see her effortless elegance. As she is styled in neutral basics and her confidence. Bessette is stunning with less and not more.

 

I believe we can strike a balance as seasons change, and invest in classic basics that are just the “right fit” for your body type and season in life. Those of you who get bored with the basics, here are a few of my nuanced spring ideas.

Have you ever arrived to check-in at the airport and been surprised that your bag weighs 60 pounds? Many of us are prone to overpacking which can turn a relaxing vacation into a stressful one. I’m already thinking about a trip I have planned to France this fall, and it’s proving to be a challenge – even for me as a wardrobe stylist!

 

Pack Less. I am an emotional dresser. If I feel good in what I have on, I can do anything. While thinking about what I was going to pack for my trip to France, my first instinct was to start shopping. Then I slowed down and thought about my wardrobe and pulled out my tried-and-true pieces. Those items I love are mostly versatile basics that can mix and match and keep me comfortable in any weather. I did purchase a raincoat with a hood. (Not that I don’t have any raincoats, but for some reason none of mine had hoods. Guess I owned them for fashion and not function!)

 

So, here is my plan for packing for 10 days with only a carry-on bag and a small backpack. I want to be in control of my belongings. I have traveled too many times feeling overwhelmed with the bulk of my bags. Wow! True confessions here!

 

Pick a color scheme. This was not difficult as I love to wear black. I am pairing the black with white and olive green. I might throw in a couple of navy pieces, and one print blouse that will go with either black or navy. I also like a checked black and white pant to pair with a solid color tee.

 

Decide on the weather conditions, temps and consider the season. I always need layers. The key here is to not pack anything too bulky for layering. Non-wrinkle stretch fabrics are best. One sweater cardigan and one blazer to take if it gets chilly in the evening or in air-conditioning. Oh, and a raincoat with a hood!

 

The airport/plane outfit. It must be super comfortable and stylish. Men: please no shorts on the airplane. I hate sitting next to a hairy leg. All items that you are packing must not be single outfits. Bringing a blouse that will only coordinate with one pair of pants is not wise. A three-piece jogger set would be perfect for the airplane. A tee, zip jacket and an elastic waist pant combo in a dark color. This can also be your lounging outfit and running to grab a coffee in the morning outfit.

 

Limit shoes to 3 pairs. The first two should be something you can walk in all day. A sleek sneaker in white or black, that you can put on the miles in, and an all-day walking sandal. This way if you get a blister, you have two options for those long days of sightseeing. Even a pair of Keens would work. The third shoe should be a bit dressier – a sandal with a wedge heel or a ballet flat. As the weather gets cooler, a nicer bootie would be a good option. Your heaviest shoes should be worn on the plane.

 

Less is more. Pack your favorites and wear on repeat. Wrinkle-free dresses are also a good option for the ease of layering and wearing multiple times. Pair it with a cashmere cardigan or cotton jacket.

 

Consider using packing cubes. I found that packing like items together, or clothing for certain activities, is very helpful – less digging around in your suitcase. Casual daytime, walking/hiking, evening outfits, sox, undergarments, and pajamas, each go in a cube together. Especially if you are going to be changing up your lodging.

 

Travel with an easy-rolling carry-on roller bag. Be sure the wheels are on the very far corners so it doesn’t tip easily.

So many new styles and washes – where to start?

 

Body shape and your height help you determine what jean style is best for you. Most of the wide-legged jeans will be very long, so getting them shortened is your best bet to get the proportion correct. If you pick the barrel jean, a high bootie or platform loafer will look the best. Getting a modern updated pair of jeans can be a task that will test your patience for sure. Finding a happy place between an updated baggy that’s “all-fashion” and one that you will look slim and trim in is something you will need to decide for yourself.

 

Coco Goose, an online store has an amazing assortment of jeans. If you are wondering what happened to the “skinny”, this site will give you an idea. Sixty-one different brands and styles!

 

If you lean toward a tailored jean, the straight will be your new trim-fit bottom that isn’t too tight on the calf. Wear them cuffed or uncuffed.

 

Midrise– some of us that are finding that the super high-rise jeans are just too much. One thing to note when ordering online (or have me do it for you) is to pay attention to the length of the rise. Anything that measures more than an 11inch rise will be high-rise. Another measurement to consider is the leg width. Anything under a 12-inch leg with will be on the slim or straight side. I would consider a 17 to 20-inch leg width for most that want to venture into a wider leg jean.

Do you have goals set for 2024?

 

Is one of those goals to be “more organized“? Just that statement alone can be an overwhelming thought. We all tell ourselves that we can go it alone. Sure, someday I will take everything out of my closet and throw it on the bed and start purging. Easier said than done.

 

I like to take it one step at a time and be thoughtful about what to keep. We might have different processes for achieving a clutter-free, easy to access wardrobe. But, being able to differentiate between a classic that is worth keeping and a trendy piece that is dated can be confusing.

 

Why is it so hard to take a realistic look at what we keep? For some, it’s the money spent or the nostalgia certain pieces brings back. When it comes down to it, we honestly end up wearing only a small percentage of what we own.

Jumping Into Fall in Style

 

It’s time to switch our wardrobes from summer to fall.

Bring in the deep rich colors and cozy fabrics of the new season with a shot of pumpkin!

 

Pants and Boots

Fall pants come in all shapes, sizes, and fabrics – from corduroy and satin, to denim and velvet. Pleated or flat front. Yes, I said “pleats”. How exciting is that?!?

 

And take your pick with low-rise, mid-rise or high rise.

 

Clients are wondering if the skinny pant is out? Just like with any new big style shift, and this is a big one, it comes with moderation. If you feel your best in a skinny pant (you know the pair of jeans that hugs your calf) keep wearing them, but style them in a different way with a flowing top or an oversize bomber jacket. So, keep a few skinnies around to try with these new tall boots!

 

 

 

Now let’s talk about the shift to the wider leg pant and the cargo! Not all cargos and wide leg pants are created equal. Proportion is the key to finding the right one. If you are tall, no problem – go for it. When you are on the shorter side stay with a straight cut at the hips then it gradually gets wider.

 

 

Satin Trouser Cargo

This is such a fun look with a little sheen to this pant. It’s a great look that will transition into fall and then again in the spring. It comes in olive and navy too!

 

Loafers are also a great way to slowly change from sandals before it’s boot time.

 

 

 

But boot time will come, so here are a couple options when you need them.

Brown is the new black this season. Style these cords just as if they were black.

 

A printed pant is always a great option to throw on with a black or Ivory top and you have an outfit. It doesn’t really have to be complicated.

 

 

Speaking of simplifying your wardrobe, now is a great time to pair down your clothing. While working in your closet to make the switchover to fall, move your transitional pieces and fall front and center. Take out summer items that you’ve not worn to be donated, wash or dry clean the rest so its ready for next summer.

“What do I wear?” How many times have you asked yourself or someone else this question?

 

Do you love getting the invitation and then it hits you, oh what am I supposed to wear? It does seem that we have more rules these days about how to dress for special events in our lives. The dress code might be implied, and even when it’s made explicit on the invitation, these descriptions can be difficult to decode.

 

I think we are a bit out of practice, and hosts are getting more creative with dress codes, so deciphering between what’s “casual chic” versus “festive cocktail” attire is really confusing.

 

Whether it’s for a wedding, baptism, funeral, job interview, casual party, holiday party, baby or bridal shower, some planning is in order. (Let’s face it, even going to the gym requires some thought and planning.)

 

So many situations in life require us to meet certain standards when it comes to dressing and presenting ourselves to the world. I believe what it truly comes down to is dressing for yourself, not others. I know that sounds counterintuitive, but hear me out; When you are dressing for a particular occasion, you want to look situationally appropriate, while not ignoring your authentic self and what you feel comfortable wearing.

 

With spring on the doorstep and many weddings and gatherings on the horizon here is your guide to occasion dressing.

 

White Tie

White tie is one of the most formal of affairs. Think very formal wedding or a state dinner situation. This requires a full length ballgown, or princess-style dress with all the extras like gloves and diamonds.

 

Black Tie

Black tie dress is a formal way of dressing. A mid to floor-length gown is the way to go for upscale events, like formal weddings & charity galas. You can never go wrong with a long black gown with bold jewels.

 

Black Tie Optional

What does this mean? When an invitation says a style of dress is “optional” the host is stating their preference, but allowing for some wiggle room. If you have a long dress, wear it—or the next best thing. Shorter hemlines that hit around the knee at a black tie–optional affair is acceptable. If you decide to go short, the dress should be fancy.

Always be mindful about the intended theme of the event. Check out what has been photographed and documented online to get an idea of formality. Religious ceremonies deserve respect with a more conservative outfit.

 

Cocktail Attire

The translation is semiformal, think elegant party dress and a great pair of heels. The LBD is a great choice for most wedding, engagement parties, and many fund-raisers. Color is always in style for a cocktail party. The easiest way to achieve the perfect cocktail-party outfit is by opting for a short dress with an A-line cut to add a bit of drama.

 

Creative Black Tie

Think of black tie with a twist. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

 

Festive Dress Code

Also known as holiday attire, creative cocktail attire, or dress-to-impress. It means to bring some fun and creativity, either in the design, color or both.

 

Beach Formal- Dressy Resort

Heading to a beach wedding or a rustic rehearsal dinner? Ditch the heels!

It’s common to see dressy resort (or garden party) on an outdoor wedding invitation. Think easy and breezy with a touch of elegance!

 

Smart Casual

Ok, my least favorite! UGH! Looking pulled-together and party-ready in jeans, I think requires a very unique blazer or a very special blouse with “kick ass” heels.

 

And lastly,

Come As You Are

Don’t believe it! Pretty much anything goes except leggings/workout wear. But, think about how you would like guests to dress if they were coming to your party.

 

 

 

Putting an event driven wardrobe together is like completing a puzzle. Sifting through the pieces making sure things fit together just right. Most dress code “rules” should be seen as general guidelines—with a few exceptions-like avoiding wearing white to a wedding unless the bride says so, and underdressing for an event such as an outdoor wedding in a casual setting.

Ok, I wish I was talking about the sky. Summer is around the corner and transitions abound. If you are tired of wearing winter clothes let’s just pretend it’s summer. If you wait too long you will miss it. Hey it is Minnesota after all, a bit of “fake it till you make it” attitude is in order.
